There is a popular story about a race between a rabbit and a tortoise. In this story the tortoise wins the race by taking advantage of the fact that the rabbit sleeps on the way. However, no one criticizes the tortoise. We might ask, "Why didn't the tortoise wake up the rabbit?" There must be something more important than winning the race. That story may be interesting as it is, because the purpose of that race was just to win. But, we must say that there is something wrong with this kind of children's education, if that story only leaves the impression on children's minds that the tortoise is great or that the tortoise accomplished a great achievement. "Be glad of your friend's carelessness and failure. Take advantage of your friend's weakness." If such a lesson is rooted in children's subconscious, they may become too competitive. If they think in their subconscious that there is nothing in life but competition, and that competition is everything, then they will grow into people with inhumane sharpness and thoughtlessness. The cause of bullying is a result of an education not based on humanity. Who can deny that somewhere in the children's education in the past human beings were taught to be pleased with other people's failure, to laugh at other people's shortcomings, or attack other people's weakness? Another feature of Japanese people is that they tend not to be concerned with other people's troubles. We might say that this also comes from thoughtlessness. When there is a winner, there is always a loser. Who in the world is teaching sympathy and thoughtfulness toward the losers, nowadays? Man cannot become happy only through winning over others. We might say that what is more important is to help other people, and to try and put yourself in the situation of other people. |
